Left 4 Dead Outbreak Achievement?
There’s been a lot of chatter about the Outbreak Achievement in Valve’s latest success Left 4 Dead (Thanks again Valve, you’re super.) The achievement is very vague in its conditions, and has spawned some debate over its meaning.
The Outbreak achievement’s description reads as follows:
Catch a rare strain of infection, then pass it on to someone else.
This is very ambiguous in its interpretation, while every other achievement appears to have a very straightforward requirement. It’s been speculated that the achievement occurs when a survivor makes contact with another player while covered in Boomer bile. Others say all developers start with the rare infection and “tag” it to other players as they play throughout the community.
I think we all respect Valve here. We recognize them as smart and playful developers. People who like playing and making games. So for them to just fuddle around with a single achievement’s definition is simply out of character for them. I’d guess that a handful of players started with the infection in their Left 4 Dead games, and are passing the “infection” to other players on their steam lists. I think it’d be very interesting to see Valve post up some stats on how quickly we were all infected. I think it’d also be very cool to see who didn’t get the achievement. In other words, who didn’t become infected, and are ultimately, the infection survivors.
If you’re reading this, what are your thoughts on this whole Outbreak thing? What do you suspect it could be?
I got the achievement earlier, about an hour ago, as soon as a boomer vomited on me… coincidence? i think not!

I just got outbreak on pc hence de name n i rekon dis achievment wil come out on xbox to wen the dlc comes out coz at the mo it used player to player dial up connection but the dlc adds dedicated servers to the xbox so heres hopin we get outbreak =], or as in this case maby we dont wont it for bragging ryts? who noes but i kinda hope i do coz i have al de other achievments =p
hey evry1 me agen, soz bout postin 2 tyms in a row but i had 2 tel ya, i was just online on expert n got man vs tank nd ground cover coz i was kilin a tank 4 ages den wen it kiled me it went fer me m8, he never attacked coz i sed 2 giv me de achievment, it downed him an i kiled de tank wid me pistol, got both achievments an den i got jump shot coz i saved another friend from a hunter dat jumped him =] it was fun but den a witch killed me just after we called de rescue vehicle on me last campaign fer wat u tryin to prove =[ i gona go get it now so luk out zombies >=p

From reading all the theories I’ve come to this conclusion which I think has already been said but anyways.
The developers star with the achievement and then they go and play versus mode in order to spread the “rare strain of infection” then when it is spread around then they don’t have to be there anymore for the “infection” to spread.
It’s really simple.
How it spreads from player to player is by being attacked (one way or another) by an infected.
Basically think of Resident Evil… One scratch and you got it…. TAG YOU’RE IT !!

I got that achiev. No idea how.
I somehow got this reward when I was bumped into by somebody who had Boomer Bile on him. I was then covered in Bile, and it said: “[his name] has spread the infection to Azrael”.

Lmfao, wow. Like everyone who comments on this doesn’t know how to spell, xD! I just was going through my acheivments then I saw it and read it then I looked on here, and yeah I think it might be bumping into a survivor when you have boomer bile on you and then they get it.
I’m uninfected! Oh, question, why do most people on youtube post videos about the No Mercy campaign, and hardly any others? And how can I change my online name, or add another? (just started playing today) I have all achievements up to outbreak too ^_^
Actually, being vomitted on and then touching someone else makes sense. The description says: “A RARE strain of infection”
Think about what Bill says in the intro:
“Ain’t seen anything like this before” — He says this about Boomer bile, as if it was RARE
Well, it makes some kinda sense, I guess ^_^;;
